Regarding DAP Socialist Youth’s (DAPSY) statement earlier on, SUPP Youth feels strongly the need to point out DAP’s several mistakes and clear the air, for people of Sarawak deserves nothing else but the truth.

1. Quotes out of context

SUPP Youth Chief has never agreed to such act, whereby the innocents have to submit themselves to the authorities’ unreasonable and unfair treatment. We try to be as objective as possible, and hope that YB Chong Chieng Jen could refrain himself from making bold and un-shameful statements. He must realize that he is a public figure, and whatever he says and does, can and will influence the society. It is obvious that the ones who cannot differentiate from right to wrong, black to white, are the DAPSYs. All the flowery words in their statements were intended to blur public’s vision, while they try their best to discredit SUPP.

2. Challenging loopholes of the law

Helping public to register as voters, there is absolutely nothing illegal or wrong about that. But according to local authority’s act, one needs to apply for permit before he or she can set up any booth(s) within areas that are under MBKS’ jurisdiction. As a Member of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblyman, as well as an experienced lawyer, Chong along with DAP, which its top leadership consists mainly of practicing lawyers, should be well aware of this, more than anybody else. If everyone behaves like Chong, then, all the five foot ways and parking lots in Kuching will be occupied by illegal hawkers. Can we even imagine what kind of chaos this irresponsible act is going to create? SUPP Youth wishes eagerly than DAPSY is capable of seeing things in a much broader perspective, stop arguing for the sake of arguing, and don’t ever put future of our society in pledge.

DAP is openly challenging the loopholes of the law, because they know the law too well. We see more and more people nowadays, following footsteps of their fake heroes, and at the end of the days, the whole society becomes a mess due to the lack of discipline and no one is abided by law.

Not only Chong went against the law, he led his men, holding placards, setting up new voters’ registration booth without even bother to apply for a legal permit, their only purpose was to gain cheap political publicity. DAPSY should not hide from dealing with this issue. Instead, they should declare their stands, whether they approve of such irresponsible act.

Enforcement officers of MBKS, in the name of upholding the law, issued a summons to those who have offended the local authority’s act, DAPSY secretary of Kuching, Wong King Wei, whom is a practicing lawyer, without even finding out the truth first, pointed fingers at MBKS’ enforcement officers. It is obvious, that Wong does not even hesitate in encouraging others to challenge the law, for the sake of gaining more exposure and cheap propaganda, at all cost.

3. DAP is not the only one upholding the legal principle, SUPP has put in even more effort

Providing legal assistant voluntarily is DAP’s right and what they chose to do, the legislation will give judgment that is both fair and just. SUPP has been providing such assistance all this while. But it does not give DAP nor Chong the right to contempt of law. SUPP will never take advantage of those who have benefited from our assistance, in exchange of cheap propaganda. We do not treat the public like chips on betting table. Instead, we help to solve complainants’ problems with all sincerity, no political motives or magic tricks whatsoever hidden under our sleeves. If we are like DAP leaders, who love to brag about their achievements, then, real meaning of serving the society has been lost. Serving the public within your constituency does not give you power to challenge and contempt the law, such behavior should not be encouraged at all. Does DAP have any sense or principles of righteousness?

5. Abuse of political democracy

DAPSY sees Chong as someone who upholds and protects the law, one rejects illegitimacy and unreasonable summon tickets, and he is being portrayed as protector of law, one who daringly says NO to abuse of power, and recognized as a good model to learn from. Is this what DAP claims political culture that is democratic? SUPP begs to differ. We think this is in fact, an abuse of, and an insult to political democracy. True politic democracy, is a way and process which involves managing conflicts peacefully through public’s power, establishing orders and realizing values that are fair and free. Ways of DAP leaders in dealing with certain issues, targeting specifically at one single person, is absolutely against what political democracy stands for. Perhaps DAPSY’s fight for democracy is set to reverse mode?

6. Irrational and untrustworthy

DAP has not shown even the slightest respect to SUPP, when its leaders launched their verbal assault on the party’s political course and thinking. As a member of SUPP, we cannot just sit back and ignore it. It would be wise if they look at themselves in the mirror before being judgmental.

Since Pakatan Rakyat took power of several states, we have seen chaos happening in these states, from corruption and demolition of Kampung Buah Pala in Penang, to ban of sales of alcohols in Selangor, demolition of pig slaughtering house in Kedah and party hoping in Perak…etc. All these show the fact, that not only Pakatan Rakyat government has not got a solid political platform, but it also lacks coordination amongst its component parties and democracy. Pakatan Rakyat government has taken over these states only for a short 2 years, and yet, has created numerous havocs and brought miseries into people’s lives, so, who is the one that lacks political thinking?

Lim Kit Siang, Parliamentary leader of DAP, had admitted earlier on during a media interview session, that formation of Pakatan Rakyat in a rush, not only has led to many internal problems, it also lacks common consensus and goals amongst its component parties.

He also admitted that the landslide victory Pakatan Rakyat had enjoyed during last general election was unexpected, hence, all promises that Pakatan candidates had given must be fulfilled not matter what.

From this statement we come to a conclusion: Pakatan Rakyat did not even expect that they could take over the state government of several peninsular states, which led us to believe, that all promises during the campaigns were made only to wow voters’ support, Pakatan candidates never thought those promises need to be cash in.

Lim said, that Pakatan is going through some tough ordeal now, conflicts and differences amongst the component parties need to be solved, and people should give Pakatan a chance to do so. Question is, Pakatan has been given a chance to govern, but other than creating so many havocs, what else they have achieved so far?

Obviously, we cannot rely on Pakatan when it comes to our nation’s future and development. Yes, Malaysian is eager to change, but the one who delivers it does not necessarily have to be Pakatan Rakyat. Furthermore, is Pakatan completely free of corruptions and bureaucracies？

Lim also said that people are slowly losing their confidence towards Pakatan Rakyat and are disappointed to see the conflicts and some internal problems have yet to be resolved.

For the past 17 months, after the general election, states that are under Pakatan Rakyat have been politically unrest. People voted for changes back then, but are these the kind of changes they are voting for?

When asked if he was confident in solving the internal crisis faced by Pakatan Rakyat, Lim was unable to give a sure answer. His best answer was that he believed there are common desires within Pakatan to do so. Obviously Pakatan has been given a mission impossible when it comes to solving differences within the alliance.

The major conflict between DAP and PAS as we all know, is on issues relating to PAS’ ultimate goal of turning Malaysia into an Islamic nation. Even though Lim stressed that component parties of Pakatan do have certain things in common, but when the differences are so great, that they have overwhelmed what the 2 parties share in common, not only it will lead to split up of the alliance, even worse, people will suffer from this split.

Even though Lim had assured, that since Pakatan was formed by 3 opposition parties, it is impossible to amend the federal constitution, as long as either one of the party is not in favor of doing so. But since Pakatan took over government of several peninsular states, we have seen DAP and PAS’ despotism is Penang and Kedah.

On the allegation by Member for Kota Sentosa that industrial lands in Sejinkat were given to cronies – as Minister of Industrial Development, I have challenged the Member to substantiate his allegation in the Dewan Undangan Negeri this afternoon. I am very disappointed that he did not do so.

We are very concerned about this kind of unfounded allegation. The Sarawak Government is serious and has indeed put in tremendous efforts in promoting industrial activities in Sarawak, with the aim of attracting investors to Sarawak. That will stimulate economic activities for the benefit of our people. Compared to the other states and other regional countries, Sarawak is greatly disadvantaged in logistics especially higher cost of transportation. We are facing stiff competition on all fronts. This kind of unsubstantiated allegation is irresponsible and does not serve the interest of our state and our people.

The SUPP Central Women Section regrets the use of such sexist remark by the 2 MPs at Parliament recently. This display of total disrespect for gender sensitivity is most disappointing as this is uttered at our country’s highest lawmaking chamber.

These MPs have been put in office to represent their constituents, both male and female amongst them, to voice their concerns on issues of national importance and not to put them in a forum where they take their roles lightly and indulge in such parlance.

In Malaysia, we have the distinction of having a Ministry specifically created for Women, Family and Community Development and having the Federal Constitution amended to reflect gender equally – by allowing such language used in our Parliament has sadly set us back in time.

SUPP Central Women Section calls for the 2 MPs to apologise for their offensive remark.

SUPP Central Women Section also calls for the Dewan to censure these MPs and all other MPs using such offensive remarks to show that while promoting freedom of speech, we are serious in preserving the decorum and dignity of the Dewan.

KUCHING: Mathematics has always been her favourite subject in school that she did not even have to go for tuitions to score an A1’s each for her Modern Mathematics and Additional Mathematics in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination which she sat last year.

Molly Lee Pei Ching, a student with SMK Kuching High here who scored A1’s in 10 subjects except Chinese Language where she could only settle for A2’s and B3 for English for Science and Technology (EST) was full of hope that she could secure the prestigious Public Services Department (PSD) overseas scholarships to do actuarial science degree course.

Immediately after the application for the scholarship which normally received overwhelming response from bright students throughout the nation was opened in March this year, Molly who scored straight A’s in all her Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination three years ago did not think twice except to submit her application online to the PSD official website.

Having submitted her application safely, Molly who had earlier approached the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth Education Unit for consultation on her tertiary education options could only remain hopeful that she could be shortlisted for the prestigious scholarship.

When she received the news that she was called for an interview sometime in April for the PSD scholarship candidates, her confidence was further boosted that she could secure herself the scholarship to do her dream course.

But when the result of the PSD scholarship was released sometime in the middle of May, Molly was devastated that her name was not in the list of successful candidates.

While still keeping her hope to be an actuarial scientist, Molly immediately went to SUPP Youth for assistance for she knew for sure that this would be her last attempt to materialize her childhood dream of becoming an actuarial scientist.

On June 1 when she least expected it, she received a call from SUPP Youth secretariat that her appeal for the scholarship was successful.

Not believing the good news and thought it was just a joke, Molly went to check the result of the appeal online and she could not believe her own eyes that her name appeared on the screen as a successful appellant.

Molly, who received the offer letter from PSD on Monday at around 3pm via Poslaju, will now be waiting to do her two-year American Degree Transfer Programme at Inti College in Nilai this coming July 1 before being sent by PSD to the United States to do her three-year actuarial science degree. Molly will be bonded for six years upon the completion of her degree.

Her two other elder siblings are also attending the Inti College here for their degree courses with her sister taking Business Administration and brother Computer Studies.

Her father, Lee Joon Heng, a former director with Penang Cooperative Development Department who accompanied the daughter to SUPP Headquarters here on Tuesday morning to personally thank the SUPP Youth Central Chairman, Alan Sim was grateful for the movement’s assistance in helping her daughter to secure the scholarship.

For Molly, all she wants to say is a big thank you to SUPP Youth.

SUPP YOUTH Fund-Raising Concert for Relocation and Construction of SJK (C) SG TAPANG HILIR

In conjunction with its 30^th anniversary celebration, SUPP YOUTH will be organising a fund-raising concert for SJK(C) Tapang Hilir on 8 June 2007, at Kenyalang Theatre Kuching.

This fund-raising concert is organised by Youth Section from Kuching, Pending, Batu Kawa, Batu Lintang, Bengoh, Serian and Bau Branches, and is aimed to raise funds for the school, which has been relocated from Bako area, to be rebuilt in MJC, Batu Kawah. The estimated cost for the construction of the new school is RM6 million.

SUPP YOUTH is always concerned and committed to assist students in educational matters, and has been successful to assist students in their appeals to secure government scholarships awarded by Public Services Department, and to assist students to gain entry into local public universities through education seminars and counselling. SUPP YOUTH has also organised numerous seminars on skilled training and the courses available. Currently, SUPP YOUTH is committed to assist the School Management Board to relocate SJK(C) Tapang Hilir.

SUPP YOUTH believes that by carrying out this fund-raising project, it will be able to get more youths involved in the Project for them to contribute to the construction of the school. This will definitely help to inculcate civil awareness and social responsibilities among the youth.
