Brief  Profile

Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr.George Chan received his primary education in Miri at St. Joseph’s school and his secondary education in Kuching at St. Joseph’s Secondary School Kuching. After his senior Cambridge examination he left for Australia under the Colombo Plan scholarship to do his Medicine at the university of Sydney and graduated with a MBBS in the year 1962.

After his return from Australia, he served in the Medical Department Sarawak and later went into private practice. He was appointed as Chairman of Miri Municipal Council in 1981 and was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1982 representing Lambir P.152 constituency and member of the State Legislative Assembly representing Piasau N.56 constituency since December 1983. He had served as an Assistant Minister in 1984. In 1987 he was appointed as a full minister in the Chief Ministers office and Minister of Social Development. In 1992, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance and Public Utilities. On 9 September 1996, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister (1) of Sarawak and also Minister of Finance and Public Utilities. On the 1st of January 1998, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister (1) of Sarawak and Minister of Finance & Public utilities as well as Minister of Social Development. On 15th of September 2000, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister (1) of Sarawak and Minister of Finance & Public Utilities and Minister of Industrial Development.

He is the Chairman of several public organisation such as Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation (SESCO), Sarawak Information Technology & Resources Council (SITRC), Sarawak Information Systems Sdn. Bhd and Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Tabiing Kebudayaan dan Sukan. He also serves as Director in various government Trust Boards.

He is also the Chairman of the Council of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Miri, Sarawak.

He is also the Patron, Chairman, President and Honorary President of many voluntary & welfare bodies and private and non-governmental organisations.

He was awarded with various State and Federal honours. He received his ABS in 1972, <MN in 1979, PBS in 1981, PNBS in 1990, DA in 1998 and PSM in June 2000.

He is the President of Sarawak United People’s Party since 1997.
